VIC:Aust buffered from US credit rating drop
Finance analyst CHRIS WESTON from IG Markets says Australia remains relatively buffered
from a drop in the world's official global benchmark.
Standard and Poor's overnight downgraded its credit rating for the US from AAA to AA+,
the first time in history the US rating has been downgraded.
CHRIS WESTON says the downgrade has been anticipated since April has come at a very
bad time, and forced selling in the pension funds sector may particularly bear the brunt
of the drop.
He says while investors should prepare for a rocky opening in Monday trade, people
should remember that expectations of a downgrade have meant the cut had already been priced
into the equity market.
He says Australia remains relatively protected from the US downgrade.

in Carlton .. killed one man with several shots.
A witness says he chased another man across busy Lygon Street and through a park before

FED: One death on Easter Sunday takes national toll to 10

SYDNEY, April 4 AAP - A man died in a car accident in South Australia on Easter Sunday,
bringing the national toll over the holiday long weekend to 10.
The 20-year-old Peterborough man was a passenger in a car that crashed on East Terrace,
Yongala, in the state's mid-north, about 2.20am (CST) on Sunday.
His death is the second fatality in the state over the Easter period.
The car was carrying five young adults, none of whom were wearing seatbelts, police said.
The 23-year-old male driver of the car has been charged with dangerous driving, after
he was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital along with a 20-year-old female passenger.
Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police across the country have condemned the actions of drivers who have put themselves
and others at risk over the long weekend.
In NSW, police are searching for two boys, believed to be aged between 14 and 16, who
ran off after an allegedly stolen car crashed in Sydney's west, leaving three injured
girls behind.
Police pursued the stolen Toyota Landcruiser after it was spotted speeding on the M4
about 6.30am (AEST) on Sunday.
The car crashed into a set of traffic lights about five minutes later at Granville.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner John Hartley stressed that police stopped their pursuit
of the stolen car after two minutes due to safety reasons and the accident occurred five
minutes after the chase ended.
Mr Hartley urged motorists travelling home on Monday from Easter breaks to drive carefully,
with more than 10,700 people charged with motoring offences so far over the Easter long
weekend in the state.
Two people have died in car accidents in NSW since the Easter weekend began.
In Victoria, police announced the establishment of a taskforce to focus on catching
and locking up drivers who cause road crashes.
The Centre for Road Policing will be up and running next month, police deputy commissioner
Ken Lay said on Sunday.
It comes after a woman was apprehended by police drink-driving on the wrong side of
the road with her baby in the back seat.
Three people have died in Victoria so far over the Easter weekend.
Across the rest of the country, Queensland, Western Australia and the ACT have each
recorded one road death, bringing the national toll to 10.

Vic: Police speak to owner of car hit by train
MELBOURNE, Feb 11 AAP - Police are investigating circumstances surrounding an accident
in which an abandoned car was hit by a freight train on a lonely back road west of Melbourne
early today.
Police said no-one was injured in the collision and the male motorist had spoken to
police after they had planned to search for him using a police dog this morning.
The spokeswoman said the man had suffered minor injuries after his car ran off the
road at Ingliston, between the towns of Ballan and Bacchus Marsh, about 70km west of Melbourne
about 1.35am (AEST).
"He wasn't in the car at the time when it was hit by the train," she said.
"It had become stuck next to the train track.
"Police plan to interview him."
The only two people aboard the train, the driver and a workmate, were not injured when
it struck the car, which police believe was parked parallel to the line, near the intersection
of Ironbark and Ingliston roads.
The roads meet beside the main rail line between Melbourne and Ballarat, Victoria's
third largest city, near the Werribee Gorge State Park.
There was blood both in the car and on the locomotive.
The train suffered minimal damage in the incident.

Fed: Downer joins call for Sheik Alhilali to go

Fed: Downer joins call for Sheik Alhilali to go
ADELAIDE, April 9 AAP - Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has backed calls for the
sacking of Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali as leader of Australia's Muslim community, describing
him as a massive embarrassment.
Mr Downer said today Sheik Alhilali had become a completely discredited figure and
the sooner the Islamic community in Australia dealt with him the better.
"Here is a man who travels the world making all sorts of completely absurd and incredible
comments," Mr Downer said.
"This reflects on Australian Muslims and it reflects on Australia.
"This man is a massive embarrassment.
"My view is that he has just got to be removed as the leader of the Islamic community
in Australia and some moderate and reasonable person needs to take his place."
Mr Downer is the latest, and most senior, Australian politician to call for the sheik
to be sacked as mufti.
The calls intensified today after reports he travelled to Tehran and urged Muslims
worldwide to support the Iranian government of Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, whose nuclear ambitions
have raised the ire of the international community.
The mufti's salary was suspended last year after he used a religious address to compare
immodestly dressed women with uncovered meat and suggested they invited sexual assault.
He is also under investigation over allegations that he donated funds collected for
victims of the war in Lebanon to terrorist groups.
Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews said today the cleric should think about leaving
Australia while Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd also called for him to be removed from his
position.
Mr Downer today questioned in what way the cleric was calling on all Muslims to support Iran.
"Is he calling for people to support Iran's nuclear program, is he calling for Iran
to become a nuclear weapons state?" the minister said.
But Mr Downer said it was up to the Islamic community to decide just how to deal with
the controversial cleric.
"They have to make their own decisions about their leadership," he said.
"But I would have thought Sheik Alhilali is not only an embarrassment, he is damaging
the standing of the Muslim community in Australia and beyond.
"This man just stumbles from one absurdity to another and he is humiliating the Australian
Islamic community.
"They need a good and moderate and decent leader and there are plenty of them who could
do the job."
Several Islamic community leaders have spoken out against Sheik Alhilali recently,
complaining that he does not represent their views.
The sheik was also recently accused of failing to account for $47,000 in donations
raised in Australia and earmarked for victims of last year's Israel-Hezbollah war.
It has been reported that after taking charge of the money in Lebanon, the mufti gave
at least $12,400 to a supporter of the Iraqi insurgency, Sheik Bilal Shaaban, to fund
his radio station.
Mr Downer said the Australian Federal Police (AFP) were already investigating some
of the financial activities of Sheik Alhilali and he would leave that investigation to
the AFP.

Fed: SKorea president sees hi-tech future for trade with Aust
By Belinda Tasker
SYDNEY, Dec 7 AAP - New high-tech digital gadgets for the movie world and electronic
games industry could be the key to Australia expanding its trade ties with South Korea.
South Korea's president Roh Moo-hyun today flagged Australia and the republic could
tighten their $18 billion-a-year trade relationship by getting their researchers to come
up with a range of new digital technologies.
Trade between the two countries has been traditionally based on South Korean whitegoods
and cars and Australian resources such as coal plus beef and wheat.
Mr Roh believes both countries now should join forces to become major players in developing
a range of digital imaging devices.
"Korea stands at the top in the world with the digitalized mobile broadcasting and
micro mobile broadcasting technologies," Mr Roh, through an interpreter, told an Australian-South
Korea business summit in Sydney.
"If we cooperate in this area, I believe we will together move more into the international
market, specifically in the movies and games industries.
"If our two countries cooperate we'll ... develop a higher level of technology (which)
I firmly believe we will be able to produce more successful cases in the world market."
South Korea's telecommunications industry is behind the groundbreaking Wi-BRO (wireless
broadband) devices which allow people to watch TV in subways, cars and on the street.
It also has an enviable reputation as a world leader in the use of information and
communications technologies such as high-speed broadband internet services.
The president's remarks came as his Communications and Information Minister Jun-hyong
Rho met with his Australian counterpart Helen Coonan in Adelaide today at the third Australia-Korea-New
Zealand Broadband Summit.
South Korea is Australia's fourth largest trading partner.
Currently, the trade relationship weighs in Australia's favour with about $11.8 billion
worth of goods and services exported to South Korea each year.
Readdressing the trade imbalance is something the South Korean president is keen on.
Trade ties between the two countries were high on the agenda for Mr Roh when he held
talks with Prime Minister John Howard in Canberra yesterday.
The two leaders have agreed to explore the potential benefits of a free trade agreement,
with feasibility studies to begin next year.
Meanwhile, NSW Premier Morris Iemma, who attended the business summit with Mr Roh,
said his government was in the process of designing a new monument for Australian and
South Korean soldiers who fought in the Korean War.
Mr Roh, the first Korean president to visit Australia since Kim Dae-jung in 1999, leaves
later today for New Zealand.

Fed: Leadership question should be off agenda: Downer
CANBERRA, Aug 1 AAP - The future of the Liberal leadership should be off the party's
agenda while it focuses on winning a tough election next year, Foreign Minister Alexander
Downer says.
Prime Minister John Howard ended weeks of speculation yesterday when he announced he
will contest a fifth consecutive election, thwarting Treasurer Peter Costello's leadership
ambitions.
Three weeks after Mr Costello demanded Mr Howard retire by Christmas, the prime minister
told Liberal Party MPs he intended to stay on as leader.
Mr Costello has accepted Mr Howard's decision, saying he will remain on the frontbench.
He had earlier called for an orderly transition, but Mr Downer said the focus should
be on the election which will be difficult for the coalition to win.
"I don't think the Liberal Party should be speculating on how they're going to carve
up the glory of victory after the next election before the Liberal Party's won the next
election," he told ABC Radio from Tokyo.
"John Howard has done a wonderful job as the prime minister of Australia.
"I think the parliamentary party is delighted that he's listened to them, that he's
continuing in the job, but that's not to take anything away from the outstanding work
that Peter Costello's done.
"He's been a fantastic treasurer and the deputy leader and he's been an integral part
of the team."
Mr Downer said the treasurer's decision to bring the leadership question to a head
did not mean Mr Costello had shown poor political judgment.
"The treasurer has been the deputy leader of the Liberal Party for 12 years and the
treasurer for 10 years, he must have pretty good political judgment relative to most people,"
Mr Downer said.
"He's got great ability, great talent and he obviously has got political judgment because
he wouldn't have held those positions for all that time if he didn't.
"I wouldn't underestimate that and I think he'll continue to serve very well in that position.
"He doesn't have the numbers, he made the right political judgment yesterday, I thought."

Fed: Donny Osmond finally embraces his pin-up boy image
By Jonathon Moran, National Entertainment Writer
SYDNEY, Feb 10 AAP - American singer Donny Osmond tried hard for years to break from
his 1970s pin-up boy image.
But it seems at 47, he wants it back.
"There was a time I hated it, thinking I gotta get away from this Puppy Love image,"
Osmond said from his Utah home today.
"I tried as hard as I could to be considered an adult but it was just a matter of time
for everybody else to grow up. We all look back in time and embrace the past so now I
enjoy it."
Osmond, who in April will begin his first visit to Australia for 25 years, has in recent
years also had to overcome a debilitating social phobia.
"You have got to fight through it and I had a lot of therapy," the singer said.
"Over the years, Donny Osmond has always had the squeaky clean image and in many circles
I still do. But it hasn't been a perfect life and I am pretty much human."
Osmond released an autobiography, titled Life Is Just What You Make It, in December,
opening up about his severe panic attacks and how he got through it.
"It was therapeutic to be able to release a lot of that stuff," he said of writing
the book. "It was cathartic."
Osmond's Australian tour begins in Melbourne on April 30 before he heads to Perth,
then Sydney, Canberra and the Gold Coast.
"It has been 25 years," said Osmond, who has five sons and recently became a grandfather
for the first time.
"I have had some invitations here and there to tour but it just never really made sense."
He is most famous for being one of the Osmond brothers, joining Wayne, Alan, Merrill
and Jay, and later sister Marie, to be international stars in the `70s.
They had hits with songs including Puppy Love, One Bad Apple, Crazy Horses and Go Away
Little Girl.
Osmond also had a successful career in theatre and television with shows such as Donny and Marie.
"The worst thing I could do is come down there (to Australia) and not do all the old
hits," said Osmond when asked about his show.
"Of course there is new stuff but it is really a celebration of 43 years in show business."

For them, Internet made no match
Duncan is the man who says he has wasted time, energy and money on Internet dating and received nothing but "disappointment and rejection." One alternative to online match-ups is a business card that reads: "I do not have a communicable disease. I am successful and gainfully employed. I own my home, and my mother does not live with me."
Your thoughts:
RAFE: Duncan has it right. The whole thing is a scam on men who pay to join while the worst women in society (obviously single for a reason) don't have to pay a dime. How this discrimination is legal I will never know. Women who serial date on these sites are the worst. They all want a Brad Pitt, but none of them are close to being an Angelina Jolie. They're lazy, ignorant, homely and demanding.
They've been scamming men for years. They'd better be careful or more men will give up on them and live life without them. More and more men are forgetting about women and turning homosexual. When that happens, women stop getting the free stuff they've been getting for oh so many years.
DRAKE: Several friends and I tried Internet dating over several years. Our basic experience was that of feeling ignored. There'd be absolutely no response, not even a "no, thanks" to a note.
I personally reached out to over 100 women on these sites. Ninety percent of them ignored me completely. My friends and I spent time discussing all of the women who ignored us. We all had similar experiences with many of the same people. Ultimately, I stopped because it was too frustrating. It just seemed silly to pay a subscription to get rejected that much.
By the way, I've been married for over two years to someone with whom I was set up on a blind date.
VAL: It's been a few years since I've played the dating game. But I don't think the mating dance has changed all that much. Back in the days when I did "Personals," I wrote an ad that drew responses from eight therapists. (I wrote about being interested in relationship issues.)
I also responded to several women's ads that resulted in sex on the first date, including a beautiful and elegant actress/model who, over dessert at a romantic country inn, asked if I could get us a room.
Then, I met my wife in a McDonald's. We were both divorced. She has a knockout body, an attractive face and an outgoing personality, and her annual income in thousands of dollars is greater than her weight in pounds.
GIGI: Duncan needs to take a break from dating altogether. He needs to talk to women as just people and see that they're not all shallow liars. By the way, while I do not participate in Internet dating anymore, I would have contacted Duncan if his profile had stated what he said in a business card. It's original and straightforward!

Wireless start-ups show their wares.
PHOENIX - Forget about reinventing the wheel. The hottest new wireless companies, which took center stage at last week's Demo 2002 conference, said their plan is to simply repurpose it.
Many of the more than 65 presenters at the IDG Executive Forums event showed how they are shying away from products and services that require costly buildouts or forklift upgrades in favor of those that take advantage of existing infrastructure and technologies.
"Only 1% of the wireless capacity is being used today," said Roland Van der Meer, a partner at investment firm ComVentures. "That is highly inefficient." The key, he said, is getting more users onto the nets that exist.
Among the companies addressing this inefficiency was talk-of-the-show Boingo Wireless, which introduced a trio of wireless Internet services designed to help mobile users who have 802.11b cards locate nearby wireless LANs (see story, page 33).
With software that can be downloaded from the Web, users can "sniff out" wireless LANs in cafes, airports, hotels or buildings. Boingo, which keeps a directory of wireless LANs across the country, charges users a monthly fee to connect to these wireless LANs via its broadband service.
While Boingo's service is aimed at populated areas, Space Data's new offering for wireless service providers has a more rural focus.
The company plans to take advantage of the twice-daily launching of several thousand weather balloons throughout the U.S. to increase the reach of existing wireless networks. Space Data will attach wireless repeaters to weather balloons throughout the country that will hover at about 100,000 feet. It then will charge wireless carriers for the use of these repeaters to extend their services. CEO Gerald Knoblach said making use of the weather balloons would keep operating costs down and provide for more widespread coverage than cell towers or satellite systems.
Another company, ClickServices, showed software that companies could use to add mobile access to applications. The vendor's Movera Server and Studio products, which work hand in hand with popular application servers, let developers create content once and provide access to it via different markup languages and protocols.
Yet another vendor, Mitigo, is exploiting digital camera technology found in the latest mobile devices to enable new applications. "Users were not having much luck using that equipment for videoconferencing," according to Sanford Squires, a consultant at Mitigo. The company says its CodePoint software lets cell phones and PDAs recognize bar codes that can be used to conduct e-commerce transactions.
Squires said one use for the service would be if someone needed to hail a cab. The user could point his or her cell phone at a bar code on a taxi stand sign and within seconds, receive confirmation of a pickup and an estimated waiting time. The service would even let the customer pay using the mobile device.
Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus and Demo presenter Linden Lab, said the wealth of new wireless offerings is evidence that companies are not being stymied by worries about security.
"Wireless companies are going to do well," he said. "There is internal demand from the line of business folks that will compel IT to figure out how to best integrate wireless technologies." n

Supportgate.com Announces WebStar Service Awards Winners.
Business Editors
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2000
Supportgate.com announced today that seven companies, which deliver superior online Web site services, were awarded the prestigious WebStar Service Awards at the annual SSPA San Diego Summit, where professionals and industry experts of the Information Technology (IT) world met to discuss support services operational issues.
The annual WebStar Service Awards are presented to recognize e-tailers who excel and ultimately provide superior customer service to their online customers.
"The SSPA has a 10 year history of recognizing excellence in customer service," said Bill Rose, SSPA founder/executive director. "It is only logical that we identify and recognize Web-based companies that deliver exceptional service online. When Internet users visit the Winner's Web site and see a WebStar Service Award logo, they can be assured that this company delivers exceptional online customer service."
The Companies chosen for this year's WebStar Service Awards are:
-- Cognos Inc.--www.cognos.com
-- Network Appliance--www.netapp.com
-- Novell Inc.--www.novell.com
-- NoWonder--www.nowonder.com
-- SafeHarbor.com--www.safeharbor.com
-- Symantec Corp.--www.symantec.com
-- Yamaha Corporation of America--www.yamaha.com
"We are honored to have won the Supportgate.com 2000 WebStar Service Award," said Barry Davis, network appliance's director of eService. "It is a critical component of our eBusiness strategy to enable our customers to manage their own data via Web-based services. This award is confirmation that we are on the right track to providing world class eServices to our customers."
The WebStar Service Awards were developed:
1. To help consumers quickly identify which companies excel at
meeting their customer service expectations on the Web.
2. To help companies who excel at providing customer service a
means to differentiate themselves from
others.
3. To create industry benchmarks for levels of customer service
to be expected on the Web.
In the past, customer service was something that was looked at by many companies as something that happened after the product was purchased. Unfortunately, in today's new e-tailing companies, customer service is often viewed as secondary to everything else. Many times, new Web start-ups do not have the money to commit to develop a good customer service infrastructure.
The WebStar Service Awards are one of the vehicles that companies can use to promote themselves. By prominently displaying the WebStar logo on corporate Web sites, customers can quickly identify which companies have met the criteria needed to be WebStar Service Award Winner. As a result, online consumers should get a high level of assurance as to the level of customer service they will receive if they choose to shop on that particular site.
"NoWonder is very honored to be a WebStar award winner. It confirms that NoWonder, as the only true net-marketplace for IT support and services, is delivering on its mission to match users with fast, reliable, and above all, personalized technical assistance," said Anthony Lye, CEO, Sunnyvale-based NoWonder, the IT support and service marketplace for corporate and small business users.

ParaSoft Delivers Jtest 3.0, A Complete Error Prevention And Error Detection Tool for Java Development.
New Complete Unit Testing Tool Features Static Analysis,
White-Box Testing, Black-Box Testing, and Regression Testing
MONROVIA, Calif., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- ParaSoft, leading provider of software error prevention and error detection solutions, announced today the release of Jtest 3.0, ParaSoft's error prevention and error detection solution for Java(TM) development. Jtest 3.0 automates unit testing and combines four essential types of Java testing into one suite.
ParaSoft's major upgrade comes at a time when Java development is skyrocketing. Research from International Data Corporation indicates that the number of Java developers will increase through 2003. The growth of Java based technology was especially evident at this year's JavaOne Conference, which boasted over 20,000 attendees.
The increasing number of large and small corporations using Java technology requires mature and reliable testing tools like Jtest. Version 3.0 automates unit testing and provides developers with a solution to prevent and detect errors with the single click of a button. Jtest automatically performs static analysis, white-box testing, black-box testing, and regression testing.
"Within minutes of first using Jtest, it had reported some important problems with critical code," said Chris Johnson, Senior Software Engineer at Vertical Networks. "In fact, I believed Jtest to be in error, yet upon careful review, Jtest had detected some very subtle problems with some of our classes."
Companies who are serious about the software they produce have realized they cannot put out buggy software and rely on customers to tell them about problems. Consequently, many are setting high standards for their development teams. ParaSoft's Jtest can help companies reach their goals with the new static analysis feature. Jtest checks Java code against a set of coding standards that helps reduce the number of errors in the final product, making code easier to reuse, modify and maintain. Additionally, Jtest offers suggestions on how to improve the quality of the code.
ParaSoft has also enhanced Jtest's white-box testing feature, which assures developers that a class is structurally sound and will not crash when passed unexpected inputs. Developers can now view each test case Jtest automatically generated and executed, and use them to create a powerful test suite.
Jtest now helps automate black-box testing, which verifies that classes behave according to specification. Jtest analyzes the class bytecodes and automatically provides a set of inputs. In addition, developers have the option of specifying their own inputs for Jtest to execute.
To help developers ensure that class behavior does not change when they modify their source code, Jtest also features automatic regression testing. This will prevent developers from reintroducing errors, as well as adding new errors into code when they make changes.
"Testing software at the unit level is so crucial to producing quality software," said Dr. Adam Kolawa, ParaSoft CEO. "We're glad to offer Java developers and managers a tool which can truly help them prevent and detect errors at the unit level."
Availability:
Jtest runs on Windows 98, NT, and Sun Solaris. Jtest 3.0 is currently available for Windows NT. For more information, please contact ParaSoft at (888) 305-0041 x 4 or visit our Web site at http://www.parasoft.com.

ANALYSIS: Under cyber attack.
Research suggests growing unpreparedness from companies in the face of more threats
Cyber attack is a real and threatening enemy, and many companies in the power, oil, gas, and water industries are totally unprepared for it.
This is the harsh but realistic assessment provided in two reports in the last two years prepared by internet virus software specialist McAfee in conjunction with the Washington, DC-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
And what is particularly concerning is that despite some companies increasing their adoption of cyber protection measures, for most, cyber security remained rudimentary.
For instance, 44% of those surveyed reported only using username and password authentication for on-site network access. By contrast, less than one in five respondents used only tokens, while 3% only relied on biometric measures.
Offsite access was only slightly more restricted: 26% of respondents used only passwords, while about one-fifth only relied on tokens and a tiny 3% only used biometric authentication. Just 10% reported that off- site network access was entirely prohibited.
More sophisticated - and effective - security measures, such as tools to monitor network activity or to detect role anomalies, were adopted by a distinct minority (25% and 36%, respectively) of the respondents.
China had the highest security adoption rate overall, at 59%, followed by Italy and Japan at 55% and 54% respectively. In contrast, Brazil, France, and Mexico had the lowest security adoption rates, close to half the rate shown by the leaders. The UK was among countries were grouped closely together around the median of 43% despite the threat of attacks increasing.
A key problem, according to the latest report's authors, is that most governments are continuing to play an ambiguous role in cyber security, sometimes helping the private sector, sometimes ignoring it.
Perhaps surprisingly, China's government appears to play an aggressive role in demanding security from its critical infrastructure. Chinese executives who responded to the 2011 survey reported high levels of both formal and informal interaction with their government on security topics.
At the other end of the spectrum was the UK, along with Spain and the US, with more than a third of all respondents reporting no contact with government on cyber security. Most of the remainder said they only had informal exchanges on the topic. A similar pattern emerged when IT executives were asked whether their security plans were audited by government. Every one of the Japanese respondents reported undergoing such audits; in China seven out of 10 confirmed they took place.
In contrast, the lowest audit rates occurred in the UK, Spain and the US, which all scored below 20%.
Over half (57%) of the respondents to the latest McAfee/CSIS survey said they had launched special security audits because of concerns about the Stuxnet virus. Around 40% said they had found Stuxnet on their systems.
Stuxnet, say the reports' authors, was an extraordinary advance in sophistication over other kinds of malware. They cite it as a concrete demonstration that governments will develop malware to sabotage their adversaries' IT systems and critical infrastructure. It also shows that hostile governments can easily target the SCADA systems on which a nation's power, gas, oil water and sewage systems depend.
And the research confirms that the critical infrastructure sector has been slow to adjust to this increasingly sophisticated threat.
Four key recommendations are made: l Improved authentication measures, moving away from passwords to a higher reliance on tokens and biometric identifiers;
* Better hygiene of network systems to include increased use of encryption technologies;
* Increased oversight of access to industrial control systems, including how they access the internet, through active management of internet connections, mobile devices and removable media;
* Effective partnerships with governments, ranging from encouragement to mandatory action.

Studies from R. Vanoest and Co-Authors Have Provided New Information about Marketing Research.
According to recent research from Oslo, Norway, "Extant customer-base models like the beta geometric/negative binomial distribution (BG/NBD) predict future purchasing based on customers' observed purchase history. We extend the BG/NBD by adding an important non-transactional element that also drives future purchases: complaint history."
"Our model retains several desirable properties of the BG/NBD: it can be implemented in readily available software, and estimation requires only customer-specific statistics, rather than detailed transaction-sequence data. The likelihood function is closed-form, and managerially relevant metrics are obtained by drawing from beta and gamma densities and transforming these draws to a sample average. Based on more than two years of individual-level data from a major United States. internet and catalog retailer, our model with complaints outperforms both the original BG/NBD and a modified version. Even though complaints are rare and non-transactional events, they lead to different substantive insights about customer purchasing and drop-out: customers purchase faster but also drop out much faster," wrote R. Vanoest and colleagues.
The researchers concluded: "Furthermore, there is more heterogeneity in drop-out rates following a purchase than a complaint."
Vanoest and colleagues published their study in International Journal of Research in Marketing (Extending the BG/NBD: A simple model of purchases and complaints. International Journal of Research in Marketing, 2011;28(1):30-37).

Knowledge Networks Study: 38% of U.S. Homes Now Have an Internet-/App-Capable Mobile Device.(Report)
On-the-go use of the Internet and apps is approaching mainstream status, according to new research from Knowledge Networks.
According to the study, 38 percent of U.S. homes - roughly 45 million - now have at least one Internet- or app-capable mobile device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or iPod Touch. The proportion grew 5 percentage points in one year, which equals an increase of over 5 million homes.
This technology puts the world of media - video, audio, gaming, and text-based - in consumers' pockets, almost everywhere they go; its adoption is therefore providing a host of new opportunities for brand interactions.
During the same 2010 to 2011 timeframe, smartphone ownership grew by about 50 percent at the household level, jumping from 25 percent to 38 percent; and tablets can now be found in 6 percent of U.S. homes, compared to essentially none (< 1 percent) a year ago.
Most notable to marketers and media stakeholders, these mobile devices are now prevalent in the homes of key media audience groups, such as:
-household member age 18 to 49 (54 percent)
-children under 18 (53 percent), and
-household income of $50,000 or more (52 percent)
The new findings come from the just-released 2011 Ownership and Trend Report, part of Knowledge Networks' The Home Technology Monitor research series - the gold standard in media technology measurement. Now in its 31st year, KN's report tracks ownership of hundreds of media-related devices and services, from wireless Internet access to DVRs to videogame consoles.
"As smartphones become the standard and tablets continue to grow, understanding distributed media becomes more and more important to media sellers and buyers alike," says David Tice, Vice President and Group Account Director, Knowledge Networks. "Traditional media like TV, Internet, radio, and print will need to take many forms to deliver content in the format best suited for the consumer at the time he or she wants to consume it."

Studies from J.C. Dekkers and Co-Researchers in the Area of Cardiovascular Research Published.(Report)
According to a study from Amsterdam, Netherlands, "Overweight (Body Mass Index [BMI] >= 25 kg/m(2)) and obesity (BMI >= 30 kg/m(2)) are associated with increased cardiovascular risk, posing a considerable burden to public health. The main aim of this study was to investigate lifestyle intervention effects on cardiovascular risk factors in healthy overweight employees."
"Participants were 276 healthy overweight employees (69.2% male; mean age 44.0 years [SD 9.2]; mean BMI 29.7 kg/m(2) [SD 3.1]). They were randomized to one of two intervention groups receiving a six month lifestyle intervention with behavior counseling by phone (phone group) or e-mail (Internet group), or to a control group receiving usual care. Body weight, height, waist circumference, sum of skinfolds, blood pressure, total cholesterol level and predicted aerobic fitness were measured at baseline, at 6 and at 24 months. Regression analyses included the 141 participants with complete data. At 6 months a significant favorable effect on total cholesterol level (-0.2 mmol/l, 95% CI -0.5 to -0.0) was observed in the phone group and a trend for improved aerobic fitness (1.9 ml/kg/min, 95% CI -0.2 to 3.9) in the Internet group. At two years, favorable trends for body weight (-2.1 kg, 95% CI -4.4 to 0.2) and aerobic fitness (2.3 ml/kg/min, 95% CI -0.2 to 4.8) were observed in the Internet group. The intervention effects were independent of the used communication mode. However short-term results were in favor of the phone group and long-term results in favor of the internet group," wrote J.C. Dekkers and colleagues (see also Cardiovascular Research).
The researchers concluded: "Thus, we found limited evidence for our lifestyle intervention to be effective in reducing cardiovascular risk in a group of apparently healthy overweight workers."
Dekkers and colleagues published the results of their research in BMC Public Health (Comparative effectiveness of lifestyle interventions on cardiovascular risk factors among a Dutch overweight working population: A randomized controlled trial. BMC Public Health, 2011;11():49).

EVOLUTION OF HUMAN 'SUPER-BRAIN' TIED TO DEVELOPMENT OF BIPEDALISM, TOOL-MAKING.
BOULDER, Colo. -- The following information was released by the University of Colorado - Boulder:
CU-Boulder researcher John Hoffecker, shown here working at a site in Russia dating back 45,000 years, believes there is mounting archaeological evidence for the evolution of a human "super-brain" no later than 75,000 years ago that spurred a modern capacity for novelty and invention. Image courtesy Vance T. Holliday, University of Arizona
Scientists seeking to understand the origin of the human mind may want to look to honeybees -- not ancestral apes -- for at least some of the answers, according to a University of Colorado Boulder archaeologist.
CU-Boulder Research Associate John Hoffecker said there is abundant fossil and archaeological evidence for the evolution of the human mind, including its unique power to create a potentially infinite variety of thoughts expressed in the form of sentences, art and technologies. He attributes the evolving power of the mind to the formation of what he calls the "super-brain," or collective mind, an event that took place in Africa no later than 75,000 years ago.
An internationally known archaeologist who has worked at sites in Europe and the Arctic, Hoffecker said the formation of the super-brain was a consequence of a rare ability to share complex thoughts among individual brains. Among other creatures on Earth, the honeybee may be the best example of an organism that has mastered the trick of communicating complex information -- including maps of food locations and information on potential nest sites from one brain to another -- using their intricate "waggle dance."
"Humans obviously evolved a much wider range of communication tools to express their thoughts, the most important being language," said Hoffecker, a fellow at CU's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research. "Individual human brains within social groups became integrated into a neurologic Internet of sorts, giving birth to the mind."
While anatomical fossil evidence for the capability of speech is controversial, the archaeological discoveries of symbols coincides with a creative explosion in the making of many kinds of artifacts. Abstract designs scratched on mineral pigment show up in Africa about 75,000 years ago and are widely accepted by archaeologists as evidence for symbolism and language. "From this point onward there is a growing variety of new types of artifacts that indicates a thoroughly modern capacity for novelty and invention."
The roots of the mind and the super-brain lie deep in our past and are likely tied to fundamental aspects of our evolution like bipedalism and making stone tools, he said. It was from the making of tools that early humans first developed their ability to project complex thoughts or mental representations outside the individual brain -- our own version of the honeybee waggle dance, Hoffecker said.
While crude stone tools crafted by human ancestors beginning about 2.5 million years ago likely were an indirect consequence of bipedalism -- which freed up the hands for new functions -- the first inklings of a developing super-brain likely began about 1.6 million years ago when early humans began crafting stone hand axes, thought by Hoffecker and others to be one of the first external representations of internal thought.
Ancient hand axes achieved "exalted status" as mental representations since they bear little resemblance to the natural objects they were made from -- generally cobbles or rock fragments. "They reflect a design or mental template stored in the nerve cells of the brain and imposed on the rock, and they seemed to have emerged from a strong feedback relationship among the hands, eyes, brains and the tools themselves," he said.
The emerging modern mind in Africa was marked by a three-fold increase in brain size over 3-million-year-old human ancestors like Lucy, thought by some to be the matriarch of modern humans. Humans were producing perforated shell ornaments, polished bone awls and simple geometric designs incised into lumps of red ochre by 75,000 years ago. "With the appearance of symbols and language -- and the consequent integration of brains into a super-brain -- the human mind seems to have taken off as a potentially unlimited creative force," he said.
The dispersal of modern humans from Africa to Europe some 50,000 to 60,000 years ago provides a "minimum date" for the development of language, Hoffecker speculated. "Since all languages have basically the same structure, it is inconceivable to me that they could have evolved independently at different times and places."
A 2007 study led by Hoffecker and colleagues at the Russian Academy of Sciences pinpointed the earliest evidence of modern humans in Europe dating back 45,000 years ago. Located on the Don River 250 miles south of Moscow, the multiple sites, collectively known as Kostenki, also yielded ancient bone and ivory needles complete with eyelets, showing the inhabitants tailored furs to survive the harsh winters.
The team also discovered a carved piece of mammoth ivory that appears to be the head of a small figurine dating to more than 40,000 years ago. "If that turns out to be the case, it would be the oldest piece of figurative art ever discovered," said Hoffecker, whose research at Kostenki is funded in part by the National Science Foundation.
The finds from Kostenki illustrate the impact of the creative mind of modern humans as they spread out of Africa into places that were sometimes cold and lean in resources, Hoffecker said. "Fresh from the tropics, they adapted to ice age environments in the central plain of Russia through creative innovations in technology."
Ancient musical instruments and figurative art discovered in caves in France and Germany date to before 30,000 years ago, he said. "Humans have the ability to imagine something in the brain that doesn't exist and then create it," he said. "Whether it's a hand axe, a flute or a Chevrolet, humans are continually recombining bits of information into novel forms, and the variations are potentially infinite."
While the concept of a human super-brain is analogous to social insects like bees and ants that collectively behave as a super-organism by gathering, processing and sharing information about their environment, there is one important difference, Hoffecker said. "Human societies are not super-organisms -- they are composed of people who are for the most part unrelated, and societies filled with competing individuals and families."
Since the emergence of the modern industrial world beginning roughly 500 years ago, creativity driven by the human super-brain has grown by leaps and bounds, from the invention of mechanical clocks to space shuttles. Powerful artificial intelligence could blur the differences between humans and computers in the coming centuries, he said.
Hoffecker is the author of an upcoming book, titled "Landscape of the Mind: Human Evolution and the Archaeology of Thought," to be published by Columbia University Press in May. For more information on Hoffecker's book visit cup.columbia.edu/book/978-0-231-14704-0/landscape-of-the-mind

The flexibility of the different module combinations, customizable to the specific buildings requirements, allows a complete utilization of the ports in the LE-135. This lowers the cost to the service provider who otherwise might require additional equipment. Advanced switching features such as inquisitive leave enables multiple Video set top boxes off a single 10/100Mbps port, reducing network traffic resulting in lower infrastructure costs.
--VoIP POTS Service - The LE-135 provides VoIP POTS service through a centralized location to multiple dwellings and tenants through the use of a multiple port module. As VoIP architecture is highly variable depending on the next generation component design of your network, the POTS module is highly configurable to meet customer needs.
Business Services:
--Instant MTU Services - The LE-135's modular design permits service providers to plug a second POTS module into a single LE-135 port, automatically activating MTU services, generating a reduction in inventory costs.
--Transparent LAN Service - The LE -135 enables Q-in-Q tagging which delivers Transparent LAN Services (TLS) for retail and remote office interconnections.
--Ethernet Service Demarcation - All the ports of the LE-135 are dual speed, either 10/100Mbps or 100Mbps/GigE. This allows the delivery of 100Mbps or GigE drops to the subscriber over either fiber (SFP) or copper. The unique port configuration of the LE-135 also offers protected (redundant) gigabit uplinks.
--Low Cost Ring Architectures - The LE-135 enables GigE Ring Architecture with customer demarcation at 100Mbps and/or GigE over fiber and/or copper with SONET-like resiliency and stability provided by World Wide Packets' carrier Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) and Rapid Spanning Tree Domains (RSTPD).
Reduced Operational Costs:
--Field Upgradeable/Replacement Units - With field upgradeable/replacement units, network operators can add and/or change power supplies and fans to the LE-135. This reduces downtime and minimizes inventory costs to the service provider.
--Modular Design - The modular design of the LE-135 adds flexibility to the overall network design. The carrier can deploy the same product yet customize it for each building and that buildings ratio of business/residential subscribers. In addition, the adaptability of the modular design allows the service provider to add on additional capabilities as requirements arise.
--Centralized Design - The LE-135 is designed to be installed in centralized wiring closets. This avoids the costs associated with entering individual customer premises, while enabling the use of existing wiring.
"With the addition of the LE-135 to the LightningEdge product family, World Wide Packets is pleased to now offer an even more robust and complete Carrier Ethernet delivery option," said Chad Whalen, senior vice president of business and market strategies at World Wide Packets. "The LE-135 allows our customers to deliver both business and residential subscribers a more reliable, cost-effective set of services while simplifying networks."

J.Crew Group Reports Preliminary Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year Financial Results; Announces Fourth Quarter Operating Income of $20MM Compared to $1MM in 2003.
NEW YORK, April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- J.Crew Group, Inc. today announced its preliminary financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended January 29, 2005.
Millard Drexler, Chairman and CEO, said, "We are pleased with both our fourth quarter and full year results. Our obsessive focus on quality, style and design along with endless attention to our customers' needs, is reflected in J.Crew's performance."
Fourth Quarter Results
Consolidated revenues for the thirteen weeks ended January 29, 2005 were $264 million, an increase of 26% from the same period last year. Retail sales (including Factory) for the quarter increased to $183 million from $154 million last year with comparable store sales up 17%. Revenues of the Direct business (Internet and catalog) increased by 47% to $72 million from $49 million last year.
Gross margin for the fourth quarter of 2004 was 39%, comparable to last year.
Selling, general and administrative expenses during the quarter were $82 million, or 31% of revenues, compared to $80 million, or 38% of revenues in the prior year. The decrease as a percentage of revenues was driven primarily by operating leverage due to the significant increase in comparable store sales.
Operating income increased to $20 million, an increase of $19 million over the corresponding period in fiscal 2003.
During the fourth quarter, the Company redeemed $319 million of its long-term debt consisting of $150 million of 10 3/8% Senior Subordinated Notes due 2007 and $169 million of 16% Senior Discount Contingent Principal Notes due 2008. Funds used for the redemption consisted of $275 million in new term loans borrowed by the Company and internally available funds. The new term loans were subsequently converted into equivalent 9 3/4% Senior Subordinated Notes due in 2014. These transactions will reduce annual interest expense by $16 million in 2005. As a result of these transactions, the Company recognized a loss of $50 million resulting from early redemption fees, and the write-off of unamortized debt issuance discount and related fees.
Net loss for the fourth quarter was $52 million (including the $50 million loss from the debt refinancing) compared to a loss of $20 million last year. Adjusted for the loss on debt refinancing, the fourth quarter net loss would have been $2 million, an $18 million decrease in the loss over the fourth quarter last year.
Full Year Results
For the full year, consolidated revenues increased 17% to $804 million from $690 million last year. Retail sales increased to $580 million from $487 million, primarily as a result of a comparable store sales increase of 16%. Revenues of the Direct business increased by 14% to $198 million in fiscal 2004.
Gross margin for the fiscal year increased to 40% from 36% last year due to improvements resulting from higher full price sell-through. Last year's gross margin was negatively impacted by the liquidation of obsolete inventories.
Selling, general and administrative expenses during the year were $287 million, or 36% of revenues, compared to $281 million, or 41% of revenues in the prior year. The decrease as a percentage of revenues was driven primarily by operating leverage due to the significant increase in comparable store sales and a reduction in catalog selling expenses.
For the fifty-two weeks ended January 29, 2005, operating income increased by $69 million to $38 million compared to an operating loss of $31 million last year.
Net loss for 2004 was $100 million compared to a loss of $50 million last year. However, fiscal 2004 included a loss from debt refinancing of $50 million, while 2003 included a gain on exchange of debt of $41 million. Adjusted for these financing transactions, the net loss in 2004 would have been $50 million, compared to a net loss of $91 million last year.
Accounting for Lease Transactions
As previously reported, the Company will classify proceeds from landlord construction allowances as operating activities in its consolidated statement of cash flows in fiscal 2004 and will restate its prior year cash flow statements to reclassify such allowances from investing activities to operating activities to conform to the 2004 presentation. This change will not have any material effect on the Company's balance sheet or consolidated statement of operations.
