Fed: Chicken-suited protesters demonstrate over GM corn

MELBOURNE, Jan 20 AAP - A shipment of genetically-modified (GM) corn imported fromthe United States arrived in Melbourne to a squawking protest today.

A group of 30 demonstrators, including some dressed in chicken suits, protested asthe Ocean Emperor, carrying 20,000 tonnes of corn, was offloaded at Appleton dock.

GeneEthics director Bob Phelps, who led the protest, warned of the potential economicand health risks posed by the corn, and called for the shipment to be returned to theUS.

Mr Phelps said labelling laws in Australia would not provide adequate warning to consumers.
